What the seasons mean for packing

Winter: prepare for sustained cold, wind and exposed skin. Build a complete layering system, including insulated boots, mittens and face protection.

Spring and autumn: plan for changing temperatures, wet snow, slush and wind. Waterproof footwear and a shell complement your warm layers.

Summer: bring lighter layers alongside rain and wind protection. Ask locally about insects and suitable clothing for your planned activities. Cool conditions can still affect outdoor plans.

Use the forecast as part of your plan

Look beyond the air temperature: wind chill, gusts, visibility and warnings affect what you wear and how you travel. For travel on the land or ice, ask knowledgeable local people about conditions and appropriate preparation. A town forecast alone does not establish whether a route is safe.
