EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS
Know what daily life will involve.
Use these questions and official resources before accepting a role, booking travel or moving your household.
Housing: confirm the actual arrangement
Ask for the address, move-in date, photos or inventory, rent and payroll deductions, utilities, sharing arrangements and rules about family members and pets. Confirm who handles repairs, keys, water tanks and heating. Housing support differs by employer and position.
Get a written plan for any gap between your arrival and your housing being available. Ask what happens to your accommodation when your contract ends.
Groceries, supplies & your budget
Every community has a co-operative in the FCNQ network; Northern operates in many communities, and Kuujjuaq also has Newviq’vi. Our community guides name the stores identified in current public source lists.
Ask about items you rely on, delivery days, special orders and local prices. Many organizations offer eligible northern employees a cost-of-living or isolation allowance, and some also cover food shipping. Include the benefits confirmed in your offer alongside rent, food, internet and personal travel when budgeting. Learn about allowances and tax deductions →
KRG’s Food and Other Essentials Program reduces the price of selected eligible products at participating stores. Check current eligibility and identified products; do not assume every purchase or household benefit qualifies.
Ask your housing contact how your home’s water supply and wastewater system work, including any delivery schedule, tank monitoring and service number. Learn how to report a missed delivery or problem and how household waste is collected.
Check current drinking-water notices locally. KRG supports municipal public works, while Northern Villages are responsible for their drinking-water systems.
Before you arrive, ask Rogers about enabling Rogers-EXT and whether your plan supports your stay. For home internet, compare Tamaani and Starlink and ask about service at your address. KRG is expanding the regional fibre-optic network.
Contact the school and childcare provider before moving. Ask about registration, required documents, language of instruction, age groups, availability and waiting lists. Confirm arrangements around school breaks and your work schedule.
Before travelling, arrange continuity of prescriptions and ask your care provider about your needs during the move. Identify the local health service, how to access routine appointments and how medication is obtained in your destination. Ask your employer about coverage and travel arrangements relevant to your contract.
Ask your Northern Village office, employer and local stores which Facebook pages or groups carry current notices. Check the original organization’s page for changes to services, events and opportunities. Public posts can be useful leads; verify important details with the provider.
KRG’s local employment services can help connect residents with work and training resources.
