How to read the percentages

The aurora percentage is NOAA’s OVATION model value in the nearest 1° grid cell above the community. It estimates short-term aurora activity under suitable viewing conditions, typically 30–90 minutes ahead. It is not your chance of seeing lights tonight and does not include clouds, moonlight, light pollution or a blocked horizon. Bright aurora may also be visible away from the overhead grid cell.

Cloud cover is the forecast fraction of sky covered by clouds, not a probability. Each night shows the least cloudy remaining forecast hour when the Sun is at least 12° below the horizon. Times are Eastern time, including daylight saving. Kp is NOAA’s regional geomagnetic activity outlook (0–9); even low Kp can produce aurora in northern locations. We do not convert it into an unsupported daily sighting percentage.
